of the narrative horror

we still struggle against

is the opulence

of some of the cultures

the Europeans discovered

when they arrived,

such as those

who built

the New World ziggurats

and forced sacrifices up

and then down

as if there is something

worth celebrating

other than the artifice

in all that.
